What industries will have jobs under Trump’s 100 day plan for international students?

The world is abuzz with Donald Trump’s election. What 1 week ago seemed so distant and impossible, this week has come to fruition.

EEEEK! Trump’s election caused worldwide panic and a million questions were raised.

I wonder what got more interest: the apocalypse or Trump’s becoming President?
It’s reality now. Nothing can change it. So let’s move forward.

Usually in the days after the election, President-elect’s draw up and release their most sought out document – a 100 day plan – essentially what Mr. Trump wants to accomplish in the first 100 days of his presidency.

That’s huge! We finally get a glimpse into his plans. He has talked a lot about hiring the best people with the best skills and the best brains. Now he has released his “best” plan.

Just like every president’s 100 day plan, his plan is very optimistic. He wants to accomplish a lot. Let’s take a peek into how this plan will affect international students.

[Note: This plan only contains relevants aspects related to university, student visas, and jobs and H1B job visa]

  • Proposal: A hiring freeze on all federal employees to reduce the federal workforce
You may lose out on some jobs here. But a majority of them are for U.S. citizens anyways. So this won’t affect you drastically.

  • Proposal: Lift restrictions on the production of $50 trillion dollars’ worth of job-producing American energy reserves, including shale, oil, natural gas and clean coal
Energy is usually a huge industry under Republicans. This time will not be different. Restrictions will be removed. There will be a boom in production of shale, oil, natural gas and clean coal. If you’re in a related field, jobs will definitely be there for you. Just beat out American citizens and permanent resident candidates vying for the same jobs as you. Be better not only in technical aspects but also in being able to market yourself as the best person for the job. Have you heard of “Fake it till you MAKE it!” Yes, you can do it! There will be plenty of jobs in the Energy Sector for Petroleum Engineers, Chemical Engineers, Industrial Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Electrical and Computer Engineers, Power Engineers to name a few.

  • Proposal: Lift the Obama-Clinton roadblocks and allow vital energy infrastructure projects, like the Keystone Pipeline, to move forward
Yes, another energy project that will move forward. If this is your industry, you should feel good about this.

  • Proposal: End The Offshoring Act. To establish tariffs to discourage companies from laying off their workers in order to relocate in other countries and ship their products back to the U.S. tax-free
Prevent outsourcing and bringing back jobs to the US.

  • Proposal: Cancel billions in payments to U.N. climate change programs and use the money to fix America’s water and environmental infrastructure
This is interesting. He won’t fund climate change any more, meaning research funding will be down. But he will definitely spend money on local infrastructure to protect Americans. This is a good sign as a lot of the local infrastructure needs upgrades and that means a lot more jobs created in the construction industry, in environmental engineering related design, materials, systems, and construction. So don’t fret. There should be plenty of jobs if you are a Civil and Environmental Engineer, Industrial Engineer, Mechanical Engineer and Chemical Engineer.

  • Proposals: Cancel every unconstitutional executive action, memorandum and order issued by President Obama; Cancel all federal funding to Sanctuary Cities; Begin removing the more than 2 million criminal illegal immigrants from the country and cancel visas to foreign countries that won’t take them back
The Donald Trump is targeting the immigration program started by President Obama. This policy relates to unauthorized immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as kids. Sanctuary cities are those cities that protect illegal immigrants. This will not affect you in any way. You’re not unauthorized or illegal or a criminal.

  • Proposal: Middle Class Tax Relief And Simplification Act. An economic plan designed to grow the economy 4% per year and create at least 25 million new jobs through massive tax reduction and simplification
    More jobs for everyone. WOOHOO!!!

  • Proposal: American Energy & Infrastructure Act. To spur $1 trillion in infrastructure investment over 10 years
That’s huge. This will create lot more jobs in every sector. The only issue for this proposal will be the Republicans in the Senate and House. They will most likely block this bill from passing due to their conservative nature.

  • Proposal: The WALL!
Yes, lots more construction opportunities here. But of course, this will find a tough time passing through both Houses of Congress.

  • Proposal: Restoring National Security Act. Rebuilds our military by eliminating the defense sequester and expanding military investment
The Aerospace industry will definitely be booming with funding in military. Aerospace Engineers, buckle up! This is will be a fun ride! Of course, all the other engineers as well – Electrical and Computer Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Business Analysts, Data Science and Analytics, Cyber Security, Industrial Engineering to name a few.

The good is that there will be jobs in many sectors. Possibly even more than currently. He has an economic growth plan that will create lots of jobs. Let’s see how that really pans out. Immigration should not be an issue in the short run. H1B visas will continue to be offered as I detailed in the other blog post.

The bad, however, will be in Silicon Valley. Tech startups have enjoyed a great relationship with the progressive President Obama, one in which they were able to influence policies with little resistance from the government. It was seen as a mutually beneficial relationship – one that would give the startups autonomy while making human lives better.

But with President Trump, things could change. The relationship may not be as strong as currently. Trump has already been extremely critical of some major Tech companies like Amazon. He has vowed to fight their tax avoiding tactics and to force them to make their products in the US. This will likely create friction with the government and possibly rip apart the relationship between Silicon Valley and the President. I’m not stating anything definitive here. You’ll have to watch out, take a chance and see how things go.

The silver lining under a Republican president has usually been in regulations. Trump’s presidency is likely to adopt a light regulatory touch, giving tech startups in areas of high innovation like artificial intelligence, encryption. This means that innovation can happen without restriction, without any conflict from the government.

So all in all, there will be plenty of jobs. According to his 100 day plan, plenty of industries will be booming. So far, no signs indicate to any changes in the student visas or H1B visas. Check out my other blog post for reasons on why I don’t believe there will be changes in the number of visas issued.
